In this 3 article series, I’ve been focusing on athletes at different age levels. I’ve talked about athletes through 8th grade, and high school athletes. Now let’s look at the athlete in college.

By college, athletes have proven they belong.

Now comes a new challenge:

Owning it.

Because the pressures are no longer just social.

They’re structural.

Playing time
Scholarships
Leadership roles
Career pathways

And still — perception matters.

Excellence Doesn’t End the Conversation

At this level, athletes may still experience:

Their performance reframed
Their leadership softened
Their competitiveness questioned

Much like elite women’s teams on the world stage.

Which means:

Validation doesn’t automatically arrive with achievement.

The Advanced Mental Skill

Now the task is:

Stability.

Can you remain grounded when:

Recognition is uneven
Feedback is filtered
Expectations are shifting

College athletes must develop:

Internal confidence

Not arrogance.

Not defensiveness.

Just:

“I know what I bring.”

The Transferable Power

This mindset prepares them for life beyond sport:

Workplaces
Graduate school
Entrepreneurship
Leadership roles

Where the same dynamic exists:

You succeed —
and the world reacts in complex ways.

The Real Win

At this stage, the mental game is no longer about belonging.

It’s about ownership.

Can you take up space:

Without apology
Without explanation
Without shrinking

That is the mindset that carries into life.

Closing Thoughts

The mental game changes as we grow older; however, the intent of the mental game remains the same.

In school
In life
